Area Events Calendar Northern Michigan offers many festivals, shows, events for all to enjoy. A partial list of area events is listed below. The camp office also maintains updated lists.
[01/21/2006-01/22/2006] Winterfest This event will be held at the Kalkaska County Fairgrounds and the Kaliseum Recreation Complex. Kiwanis members will serve pancakes on Jan. 21 and the Commission on Aging mans the lunch stand. Also included are sleigh rides, dog sled rides, entertainment and crafts. S. E. Wait Exhibit Showcases Early Traverse City (Jan.3 - Mar 31, 2006) Images of early Traverse City will be showcased at the Grand Traverse Heritage Center during its upcoming exhibition, ''S. E. Wait: Traverse City Photographer and Renaissance Man.'' Exhibition features over 30 images during the 1890s of life in and around Traverse City.
12th Annual Downtown Chili Cook-Off (Jan 21, 2006) Taste the top chili samples in the region as chefs vie for top honors in downtown's popular chili cook-off, featuring dozens of local restaurants and chilies, including Minervas' award-winning white chicken chili (Best of Show for 8 years running!). $8 for 8 cup sample - 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Held in the ''Dome'' at the Park Place Hotel, 300 E. Empire Winterfest (Feb 5 - Feb 11, 2006)-At Johnson Park, there will be a bonfire where you can roast hot dogs and drink hot chocolate, free of charge, also ice skating on Friday at 7:00 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. there will be Friday Night Pool Tournament at the Village Inn. Snow Softball with firefighters next to Village Inn at 11 a.m. At 2:00 p.m. the Polar Bear Dip begins in South Bar Lake. Following the Dip there will be curling, cross-country ski race and a Fun Run around South Bar Lake at 3 p.m. - prizes and hot chocolate at Johnson Park. Saturday night at 6 p.m. will be dinner and dance at Townhall - Firefighters Ball. Sunday activities include Mason's pancake breakfast starting at 7:00 a.m. Come in for pancakes and check out the snow sculptures in the Village. 2nd Annual Winter Carnival (Feb 25, 2006)-Please join us in an afternoon of family fun at Leelanau Township's Braman Hill Park. [04/15/2006] Easter Egg Hunt The Springfield Township Recreation area and the Kalkaska Kiwanis are sponsoring easter egg hunts on this date. 70th Annual National Trout Festival (Apr 26 - Apr 29, 2006) Carnival, flea market, car show, children’s activities, horseshoe throwing, senior events. 3rd Annual Empire Asparagus Festival (May 19 - May 20, 2006) The Spring Asparagus Harvest will be celebrated with festival in the Village of Empire on Friday and Saturday. Events include: a fun run/walk at 9 a.m. at Wilco Hill, kids' games, a car show, a parade starting at 2 p.m. on Front Street on Saturday, cooking contest, an ''Ode to Asparagus'' poetry reading/reception on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Empire Town Hall, Lions' Club Asparagus Dinner, dance from 8-11 p.m. at Empire Town Hall and much more. Leland Wine and Food Festival (Jun 10, 2006) Enjoy tasting several selections of wine from area vineyards as well as tempting epicurean delights under a big tent overlooking Lake Michigan. Horse Shows By the Bay, Series II (Jul 19 - Jul 23, 2006) Hundreds of highly trained horses will be making their home in Traverse City for a three week equestrian festival featuring the Olympic sports of Grand Prix Show Jumping and Grand Prix Dressage. Sanctioned by United States Equestrian Federation as "AA" and "Four Star," Horse Shows by the Bay offers riders and horses from all over the country an opportunity to compete for $300,000 in festival prize money and a chance to qualify for prestigious year-end finals and awards. Series II highlights include classics for pony hunter riders, the $10,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame Junior-Amateur Owner Jumper Prix, and the $25,000 Grand Traverse Bay Grand Prix. Traverse City Film Festival (Aug 1 - Aug 6, 2006) The Traverse City Film Festival will be an annual event in Northern Michigan. The 2nd annual film festival will have more films, more days, more venues, more activities, and more fun. There will be more parties and premieres, more family and children's films, as well as more panel discussions featuring actors, directors, writers and other film industry representatives. The Port Oneida Fair (Aug 4 - Aug 5, 2006) An event that includes a variety of activities presenting traditional rural crafts, skills, cultural traditions and history, as well as contemporary art inspired from the rural landscape and culture. [10/21/2006] Fiddler's Jamboree The Kalkaska Civic Center is the place and your toes will be tapping with the music from 1 to 10 p.m. Entertainment is from 1 to 5 p.m., and open mike and supper for a fee is from 5 to 7 and dancing is from 7 to 10 p.m. Free admission, but donations are welcomed.

[11/04/2006] Iceman Cometh Over 2,000 mountain bikers will converge on Kalkaska for the starting point of this wintry race. The ending point is in Traverse City, but there is plenty of fun between here and there.
[11/11/2006-11/19/2006] KAIR Festival of Trees Northland Mall is the location for this first glimpse of the Christmas season. A living Nativity, Santa and fun for the entire family as well as raffles are planned.
